Celebrate Worldview!

We are heartbroken by Chicago Public Media’s refusal to keep Worldview on the air, at any time and in any format. You can read about the outpouring of support for Worldview and Chicago Public Media’s response here.

As we say goodbye to Worldview, let’s celebrate it’s incredible legacy and give thanks! Because of Worldview, we know the world and our neighbors better. We’ve done so much more than listen – we’ve learned, grown, and engaged as an empowered community.

So please, take a minute to write a short thank you to the Worldview team, including host Jerome McDonnell, senior producer Steve Bynum, and producer Julian Hayda. We’ll make sure that they see it! Thank you.

Note that leaving your email address and website is just optional.

I am one of those rare few who “winter” in Chicago.

I have returned to find one of the greatest things about Chicago is gone.

Thank you, Jerome and crew, for giving voice to the voiceless, for making us better people, and for creating Chicago’s precious culture of international engagement. It is impossible to measure the depth of your impact.

Jerome, Steve and Julian:. I am deeply grateful to you for introducing me to so many interesting people with unique perspectives, fresh opinions and inspiring solutions to all of the challenges we are grappling with. You truly provided a forum for voices that deserve to be heard, and I trust you will find ways to continue your mission of opening our eyes and hearts to global issues. I’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines as you branch out in new directions.

So very sad and very upset with WBEZ that Worldview is canceled. It’s one of the shows that got me started on WBEZ in the first place almost 30 years ago. I would go to lunch with my Dad and it would be playing in the car. So I would always catch some of it. Back then it was Sandra as host. I moved to New York for a while and stopped listening but when I came back I tuned in whenever I could, and totally loved Jerome McDonald . The only show on any radio or tv station that gave respect to the Palestinians. The show gave respect to everyone, and was the only counter to a huge corporate mainstream narrative, which includes NPR News btw. I would have much preferred they canceled NPR News. Very very angry at WBEZ and I vastly reduced my contributions. There needs to be a place on the WBEZ app to only tune in to Jeromes future reporting.

Dear Jerome, I was not a regular listener. In fact, I only discovered Worldview’s cancellation yesterday. But the times I could tune in were always special. Worldview was intellectually invigorating yet absolutely practical. Had I been in Illinois over the summer, I would have joined the effort to keep the show on the air. Thank you for Worldview and its legacy of a better enlightened, better connected, and better engaged Chicagoland.

To Jerome, Steve and Julian- I am indebted to you for bringing me the most interesting show, on far ranging, relevant topics. You exhibited respect, kindness, empathy and knowledge in everything you did. Worldview was one of a kind. I now have one less thing to look forward to. Thank you!

I thank Jerome McDonnell, Steve Bynum, Julian Hayda and everyone who has brought us Worldview over the years. Second in popularity only to Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me (it makes me laugh), Worldview has broadened my horizons and understanding of the larger world. It has been one of my favorite NPR programs and will be sorely missed.

The loss of Worldview is unfathomable to me. It was, in my opinion, the best program on WBEZ. I can’t begin to enumerate all the issues I have been introduced to, learned to care about because of this show. I have become a better person because of this show. And Jerome and his staff did it in a way, and with a personality and style, that can never be duplicated. The most recent memories, that will be with my always, were of Jerome’s broadcasts from Morton Arboretum and Chicago Botanical Gardens. I am not a gardener, but because of these shows I have become even more of a tree-lover, and I feel I am now an evangelist fo planting native prairie gardens. I have become so much more of an educated person because of this show.

I intend to speak with my wallet on this and cut my contributions to BEZ in half, because half the value of the station has just been cancelled. What a shame.

I am truly saddened by the termination of WorldView especially since it was my very favorite program on WBEZ- in fact on NPR. Through WorldView, i truly gained a better and often more exciting view of what is going on in countries that unfortunately, i will never get to visit nor be able to read their newspapers. Specifically, due to WorldView, i am more informed of the unjust things going on in the world but also the rays of hope created by people from all parts of the world who are fighting back and/or creating incredible examples of ways to make the world a better place. I also liked to hear about the volunteer activities and ways to donate to projects literally world wide. As someone increasingly concerned about the climate, I also appreciated the attention paid to this issue even when denial was more the norm. I to this day, don’t understand why the management of WBEZ did not understand the value of this program. Everything is not about prime time ratings- public radio should also about be about “service to the public” especially when so many concervative reporters are doing their best to destroy this hope and the ability to have an informed public. Also WBEZ should be proud of its unique contribution to the world class city it serves. What is unique and powerful is not another 2 hour talk show that is engaging but probably is covered in other outlets or not that relevant in the world today. It is very disappointing and the first time i have considered why i am a member and am considering not renewing because of your decision to not host WorldView. In fact, i have decided not to renew.

  13. Larry Garner says

    October 7, 2019 at 10:51 pm

Interesting the use of the passive tense to describe what happened to “World View”: It “was dropped”. How about telling us who exactly was behind this move? At no point in his “farewell” did he deliver the usual de rigueur “heartfelt” comment: “It was just time to move on.” Looks to me as if Jerome was simply dumped because you and others at the station thought his program had become “stale”, i.e., no longer had a “young” sound to it. (Perhaps that’s why Marc Garber’s voice also is no longer heard? It appears to have been replaced by voices many of whom sound as if they are newly graduated from high school–a sound that matches what I hear as a lack of intellectual preparation for incisive and articulate reporting.)
Was Jerome in agreement with the move? What could be the rationale for replacing a unique program for audiences that will no longer have Jerome as a voice for issues and stories coming from places throughout the world and not heard elsewhere on the radio dial? A call-in local talk show is a dime a dozen, and it promises just more of the same: palaver devoid of critical analysis. You might get more listeners for the proposed replacement, but the show will certainly be chatty, commonplace, and anodyne in a way Jerome’s show never was.

    Jerome and crew,

Thanks for all you did to make World View part of my day! I listened to the last program with a great deal of regret regarding WBEZ’s decision. I have been a member for many, many years, and have always wondered why so-called member’s are not consulted when program changes are introduced. It betrays the true meaning of the word.

Jerome, Steve, Julian, We peacemakers are indebted to you. I never imagined Worldview would go off the air because, to me, it’s unique value was obvious. As others have written, Worldview made global news locally relevant. The BBC spots on the last day were insulting — BBC is no substitute to Worldview at all! Those who think it will he simply don’t “get it.” To wrap up on a happy note – your legacy is strong! You are young with much more to offer! I look forward to it. – Ed

I especially liked the feeling I had that we really were “viewing the world”–together, from our spot in Chicago. I managed to catch the final 15 minutes on Friday…and needed that many Kleenexes while listening to Jerome bid adieu. Thank you for creating space for real dialogue, for deep listening, for providing alternative viewpoints, and for deeply caring about our community. More than once your interviews moved me to tears, or left me thinking long after the show ended. I’ll never forget translating live on the air for Joaquin who was visiting from Nicaragua as you interviewed him about life as a coffee farmer. I’ll never forget speaking on the show just after a woman who was trafficked and is now creating safe havens for young girls. I’ll never forget your gracious hosting of Global Fest, honoring local and international citizens who are working to make a difference. Thank you, muchas gracias, your show lives on in all of us who loved tuning in every day at noon.

I wasn’t a daily listener as so many of the folks who have commented on what an outstanding show WorldView was; as I read the thoughts of others I realize I have missed what was undoubtedly the finest program on the air. The cancellation of the show feels like one more thing that is wrong with today’s world. So many people in the news today seem selfish and only concerned with their themselves —no thought that we are indeed a global society, is dependent upon each other. Jerome and his crew always transcended this smallness and helped us to see our world through different eyes. I too cannot understand the thinking of the higher powers at WBEZ, and, as another listener voiced, don’t feel as obligated to support when it seems that listeners opinions have been ignored. Good luck, Jerome, Steve and Julian and Thank
    You.

I have been a listener to Worldview since the Sandra Gair days. I had the honor of bringing Sandra and Jerome to speak at the College of Lake County, Grayslake, IL when Jerome was Sandra’s producer(?) or maybe he was just her assistant then.

I am still agonizing over whether I will continue my monthly support for WBEZ. WBEZ has failed by the elimination of Worldview.

Perhaps Jerome and Worldview could be picked up by WUWM. Many of us can hear that station.

This is a tragedy that Worldview is discontinued. Jerome and all were fabulous at digging into the various international issues, as well as domestic issues about PEOPLE. How sad that WBEZ doesn’t recognize the value of this program. I listened to this program since before there was Jerome, when a woman (forgot her name!) led the way. She would pick up the phone and call leaders all over the world. Will you not continue in some modified way to have this direct communication with allies and enemies? How foolish to drop this signal of democracy, where all facets can be discussed in the open. Is WBEZ going down the tubes? Or else please announce your new version of this communication.

Dear Jerome and worldview’s team: I still can’t believe that WBEZ has chosen to terminate the best international news program on the radio, not just news, not a talk show, but thoughtful and lively interviews with people and organizations not heard anywhere else You were on the side of those trying in your words” to make the world a better place,” without being ideological about it, You brought in contradictory voices when needed and you had a good sense of humor. You were always so positive! Before getting rid or Worldview, WBEZ got rid of PRI The World 7:00 PM. This, at a time when we need more than ever to understand the world as a global place – our only planet, and yes thank you especially, Jerome, for all you have done to stress the urgency of trying to save what is left of it. Rarely does a media program live up to its name, but Worldview did just that—giving us a nuanced, international and intersectional view of our society’s most contentious, most important and most fascinating issues. Jerome it was a sincere honor to be one your program years ago as an environmental artist and just a few weeks ago, for Extinction Rebellion. Your program is heroic to me for always covering the environmental issues others passed by…and just look where we are now. It has been a great way to catch up on what advocacy groups are doing and to get behind the headlines to understand what was going on in far distant parts of the globe. I have laughed and cried with you…especially today as the staff said your thanks and best wishes to Jerome. Much as I like Jen White’s style of interviewing, I can’t imagine the new show will be even close to plumbing the depths of stories behind the headlines. I hope I am wrong. Hoping there might be meet-ups? I’m listening to the recording of the last show from the UK as I type, and wonder how we will do without Worldview. Such honesty, inspiration, and exposure to ideas and people and locations that I’d never even heard of or thought about. I will always treasure my friendship and working relationship with Rose Ayuma Moon, whom I met after hearing her on Worldview (driveway moment in 2006!) and last saw a few weeks ago when I was working with her in Kenya. Hyper-local (Global Activists) and absolutely international. There is no match for Jerome and Worldview, and likely won’t be again. Your pledge drives, quiz programs, World Cup coverage etc were often hilarious. (Btw, I’m still waiting for Jerome’s oatmeal cookie recipe.) To Jerome, Steve, Julian and ALL who created and produced Worldview :

Chicago and the world lost one of its shining hopes to bring understanding and compassion to a much colder political and social climate on our Earth.

During the past three years, your program was a comforting voice, hope for the many without one, solace for those yearning for understanding, and inspiration for all to achieve greater humanity.

Now when we need your program most, its shoes will be very hard to fill, despite WBEZ’s assurances. That special non-formal education it offered isn’t available in classrooms and books, but is so valuable, especially at this time when most people seem to lack even nano-grasps of Chicago as well as world realities.

I hope in the future, people will not lament that not enough programs like Worldview existed to teach and guide us to be more human to one another. Whether or not money was more important than education, the guilt will be on those who brought down yet another pillar of enlightenment.

Good luck to ALL of you, and I expect to hear your voices and listen to your shows elsewhere on the radio dial, in the very near future.

    Sincerely yours,

Jerome, Steve, Julian — how can we all thank you for the work you did and the stories you’ve told? Worldview truly gave us a peek into different global issues that I haven’t seen covered anywhere else (especially not on the radio). Your guests were always fascinating, your interviews enlightening. Every time I listened, I came away knowing something new that I probably wouldn’t have sought out myself but made my life fuller.

I hope you know how much Worldview enriched the lives of everyone who listened.

    Dear Worldview and Jerome,

I listened to the last production today. Felt my eyes water in hearing the tributes to what you stand for and who you are as human beings. There is a hole in our hearts for all you have done to educate and expose us to essential matters occurring around the world and here at home.
My thanks for your committment to making the world a better place. May all of you be able to find some avenue for continueing your exceptional work.

I cried during today’s heartfelt program.
I commend all of you from worldview for honesty and compassion. Sometimes the topics addressed were so difficult to listen to. Somehow almost magically there would be an offering of how to help, people to contact. A way to contribute to the solution. You never let me feel that there was a way to help. I was always reassured that there were good and loving people in the world. People Not afraid to speak the truth.
    Thank you for your service.

Heartbroken to see truthful people smothered .
    Thank you again for service.
    May your road joyful

An invaluable show. A great loss. Whenever we Americans turn toward ignorance and isolationism, we end up regretting it. Yet we keep doing it just the same. I am extremely disappointed in my hometown radio station WBEZ. But I will always remember Worldview’s commitment to bringing the world to Chicago. Gratitude and Respect!

Worldview has been totally unique. It’s ability to bring context to the news and the
activists who tried to create a better world has been the one two punch that no one!!!
in their right mind would want to see cancelled. What were the executives thinking?
My wife and I have loved the show and Jerome’s intelligence and style.

Congratulations and thank you for the special programs you have aired. Your work will be sorely missed, especially in the increasingly insular current culture that seems content to live within its cocoon of personal or very local entertainments.
I hope you will find other ways to aid the public in understanding what goes on around the globe that deserves our attention.

    Dear Worldview,

This program had everything: interesting, varied and unusually focused, instructive information delivered by experts around the world; Jerome McD.’s knowledgeable and high-spirited interviewing; music from around the world…

No matter what the powers that be may say, it’s difficult not to regard this marvelous program’s demise not just as a tremendously damaging slice out of the information available to Public Radio’s curious audience but as a real blow to WBEZ’s integrity as well .

    Jerome, Steve – and Julian:

It was an emotional moment to listen to the final broadcast of Worldview today. THANK YOU for your many years of service to bring the marginalized voices of peoples around the world on to Worldview to the people of Chicago.

These voices are so vital for Americas to hear, especially since US policies and practices as the world superpower need to be understood from the point of view of those that are impacted. Sadly, these voices of leaders of grassroots social movements and impacted communities are largely ignored by the media, and get only limited attention on NPR. Worldview allowed their voices to be heard by everyday working Americans who tune in.

Thank you for your 25 years of programming integrity.

Thank you for the engaging story you aired last week of a undocumented Korean, DACA, young adult.

Thank trust you established between Worldview’s diverse guests and WBEZ listeners.

Thank you for the lasting links you have opened between the broader public and Chicago’s diverse immigrant communities from around the world.

I always enjoyed Worldview when I was a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the 90’s; further, I admired Jerome McDonnell’s obvious passion for and belief in the value of public radio (unlike others, he firmly refused to be apologetic during fund drives). Even though it’s been 18 years since I lived in Chicago, it still strikes me as a real shame that this excellent show has been canceled.

I am grateful to have met you and only wish the best for you in the future. Thank you for your partnership with the Indian community and particularly India Development Service.

Thank you so much Jerome, Steve, Julian, and everybody connected with Worldview for the past 25 informative and enlightening years. Worldview has been a window on to issues, histories and communities that I otherwise, would never have heard of. I am going to miss this local global perspective so incredibly much. Thank you for 25 years of absolutely outstanding radio excellence.

Thank you, Mr. McDonnell. I don’t know why WBEZ stonewalled everyone who asked that your show be kept on the air. It’s bizarre. But I do know that Worldview has touched lives in a way that truly leaves a positive legacy that will endure for decades. Congratulations and thank you for a job beautifully done. I’m going to be balling my eyes out as I listen to the last show today! Worldview has made the world a better place. I’m confident of that because my life is better because of Worldview. I’m a more responsible citizen, I’ve attended amazing events, I’ve joined new organizations, and have new friends because of Jerome McDonnell! We’ve never met but I am so indebted. I look forward to your environmental reporting but will miss Worldview terribly. Thank you for your extraordinary work.

I already sent a thank you but I’m happy to do it once again .

I will miss this program so much .
When I first moved to Chicago I discovered Sondra Gair When she died I worried that the show would end but Jerome came in and continued her legacy .

The end of this show is one more nail in the loosening of my ties to this city . Our connections to places is composed of ties to things besides family and friends Things like shops and their owners and staff , restaurants , familiar landscape and yes radio shows become a part of the fabric of our lives
I will miss the in-depth ( not one of those 10 minute npr ideas of in depth ) discussions about politics ,history, the environment and cultural events
    With respect,
    Deborah Hellerstein

To Jerome, Steve and Julian: Thanks for the years of enlightening the public about issues around the world that affect not only the people living in the countries you’ve covered, but also the broader community. Listeners of Worldview have had their horizons expanded by many who have spoken on your program about the successes of, and challenges faced, by their native countries. Wishing all of you the best of success in your next endeavors.

After listening to Worldview for years, it was a thrill to bring the Salaam-Shalom Music Project onto the show to talk and play music from different faith communities. In person, Jeremy is just as kind, friendly and deep as he is on the air. Julian Hayda was a pleasure to work with and ran a tight ship along with the rest of the team. I hope there continues to be a local program with a world view. I’m already missing it.

Worldview has been for years the one weekday program I go out of my way to listen to. It is unlike any other show anywhere, covering issues, people and organizations not covered anywhere else. I can’t imagine what WBEZ thinks its mission is , if it’s not to provide a show like this. My world will be a less interesting place without this show.

Jerome, Steve, Julian: it’s hard to find words for what Worldview has meant to me. Specifically in my case, your long listening about Colombia has affirmed the dignity of my friends who struggle for the survival of their communities & face death threats in the process. Here in Chicago I have several good friends whom I met in the wake of interviews you did, & we have collaborated on Colombia projects, & in one case traveled together & even made a book together. Your caring & intelligence & ethical centeredness & friendship made these connections possible. Muchísimas gracias, & so much love.

I am deeply grateful for it. Thank you.
